Avalon provides a range of pre-paid funeral plans designed to take care of the details so your funeral will be planned for when the time comes. We’re always here to provide ongoing help and support to all our clients. Here we answer some of your most frequently asked questions to give you an idea of funeral costs along with a funeral planning checklist and a funeral planning guide.

What is a funeral plan?

Quite simply, a funeral plan lets you choose the type of funeral you want and – most importantly – pay for it in advance.

This protects you and your loved ones from rising funeral costs and takes away the stress and worry of arranging your funeral at a time which is already emotional for your family.

What are the benefits of taking out a funeral plan?

By taking out a funeral plan with Avalon, you will give you and your loved ones peace of mind and protection from rising funeral costs.

If your plan is used in mainland UK or Eire the plan guarantees the cost of the Funeral Director’s Services and provides a predetermined allowance towards the Disbursements costs.

Your plan also makes things easier for your loved ones when the time comes. They’ll have fewer decisions to make and less to worry about.

What are Funeral Director's fees?

Funeral Director’s fees cover all the elements of the funeral that are provided by the Funeral Director directly. They include but are not limited to, the provision of Funeral Director services, supply of a coffin, and care, preparation and transport of the deceased.

What is dual certification?

This special feature allows plan holders who live in two countries that we operate in to have a service in either location. There are no additional costs for dual certification.

If you buy a plan with dual certification and your funeral takes place in mainland UK or Eire, your plan covers Disbursement Costs up to a pre-determined limit for cremation or burial. This allowance for Disbursement Costs will increase annually on 1st July in line with increases in the UK Consumer Prices Index (CPI).

What are disbursements?

Disbursements are the payments associated with the funeral that the Funeral Director makes on your behalf. They include the cremation or cemetery fee, Doctor’s medical certificate fee and Minister’s fee. If your funeral takes place in Spain, Portugal or Cyprus the Disbursement Costs described on your plan certificate are fixed for the lifetime of the plan. No matter how much these costs rise by in the future, they are guaranteed to be provided at no extra cost to you or your next of kin, providing the funeral is carried out by the Funeral Director stated on your funeral plan certificate. You can find specific information on each or our plans under Expat Funeral Plans.

If you buy a plan with dual certification and your funeral takes place in mainland UK or Eire, your plan covers Disbursement Costs up to a predetermined limit for cremation or burial. This allowance for Disbursement Costs will increase annually on 1st July in line with increases in the UK Consumer Prices Index (CPI).

In mainland UK and Eire there may be a balance to pay at the time of need if the actual disbursements charged by the nominated Funeral Director are more than the limit plus the annual uplifts in CPI. This could happen if you live in an area where disbursement costs are high or disbursement costs rise much more than increases in the CPI.

What is repatriation?

Many British expats would prefer to be returned to the UK to be laid to rest. This process is known as repatriation.

Our Repatriation Funeral Plan in Spain and Portugal includes Funeral Director services in both countries and contribution towards the flight, as well as a cremation in mainland Great Britain.

Our Repatriation Funeral Plan in Cyprus includes Funeral Director services in both countries and the cost of the repatriation flight with a cremation in mainland Great Britain.

What does my plan include?

If your funeral takes place in Spain, Portugal or Cyprus both the Funeral Director’s Fees and Services costs and the Disbursement Costs described on you plan certificate are included in the plan and are fixed for the lifetime of the plan. No matter how much these costs rise in the future, they are guaranteed to be provided at no extra cost to you or your next of kin, providing the funeral is carried out by the Funeral Director stated on your funeral plan certificate.

If you buy a plan with dual certification and your funeral takes place in the UK or Eire, your plan also covers Disbursement Costs up to a predetermined allowance for cremation or burial. Please see our price list for the current value of this allowance. The allowance for Disbursement Costs will increase annually on 1st July in line with increases in the UK Consumer Prices Index (CPI). There may be a balance to pay at the time of need if the actual disbursements charged by your nominated Funeral Director are more than the allowance limit plus the annual uplifts in CPI. This could happen if you live in an area where disbursement costs are high or disbursement costs rise much more than increases in the CPI.

In Spain and Portugal, our Repatriation plan includes a contribution towards a flight to mainland Great Britain and Funeral Directors services are included. The Expat Simple and Expat Plus plans do not cover repatriation costs.

In Cyprus, the Repatriation plan includes the cost of a flight to mainland Great Britain and Funeral Director services. The Expat plan does not cover repatriation costs.

Is a burial plot included if I choose an Avalon plan for burial?

Our standard plans do not include the cost of a burial plot apart from our Expat plan in Cyprus. If you require a burial in Spain or Portugal there maybe addition fees payable at the time of need so please ask us for more information about burials.

Can I choose my Funeral Director?

We have a number of local, reputable, independent Funeral Directors to fulfil the funeral arrangements in the future. When you purchase your plan we will allocate a Funeral Director. If you have a preferred Funeral Director we will do our best to allocate your plan to them, but this is not always possible. If it has not been possible to allocate your plan to your preferred Funeral Director we will allocate one for you. If the Funeral Director we have nominated is not acceptable, please contact us to discuss alternative Funeral Directors who could provide the funeral.

If you select dual certification, two Funeral Directors will be allocated; one for each country of residence.

Please note that in Cyprus we work exclusively with Archangel Funeral Services.

Where is my money invested?

Your money is securely invested in the Avalon Funeral Trust No.4. The funds in Trust are held separately to the Company and managed by Independent Trustees to ensure your money is protected. An actuarial valuation is performed annually to ensure there are sufficient assets to meet the future payments to Funeral Directors.

What happens if I change my mind, do I get a refund?

You have 30 days to cancel the plan in writing and receive a full refund of all monies paid. If you cancel the plan after 30 days a cancellation fee of €495 will apply.

In Cyprus you can upgrade your plan to a Repatriation plan.

Can I change my nominated Funeral Director?

Yes, you can choose another Funeral Director from the reputable Funeral Directors that partner with Avalon to fulfil your funeral plan. However, on occasion this may not be possible.

Please note that in Cyprus we work exclusively with Archangel Funeral Services.

Will there be anything more to pay at the time of need if my plan is fully paid?

If the plan is fully paid and your funeral is fulfilled by the nominated Funeral Director in Spain, Portugal or Cyprus there will be nothing further to pay for any of the services described on your plan certificate.

If you use your plan in mainland UK or Eire the plan guarantees the cost of the Funeral Director’s Services and provides a pre-determined allowance towards the Disbursements costs. If the cost of Disbursements is higher than the allowance included in the plan your next of kin will be asked to pay the difference between the two amounts.
